In honor of the Great Michael Jordan's induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame over the weekend, who by the way was the greatest to ever step onto the basketball court, I thought we would draw our topic for discussion from his 2005 autobiography Driven From Within Michael Jordan. In his first chapter titled Earned, Michael stated,
"I wanted to prove what I could do. When my play started providing me with rewards, then I wanted to prove I deserved them. I never felt the desire to rest on what I had accomplished. I never felt like I deserved to drive a Bentley when I got my first contract, or live in a mansion. Those things might be symbols of success to some people, but there are a lot of people who confuse symbols with actual success. ...NOTHING OF VALUE COMES WITHOUT BEING EARNED."
So my thinking and the question that I want to pose is this, How does Mr. Jordan's statement about symbols being confused for actual success, fit into the world of school? How are symbols of success and actual success confused during your high school career?

People just skim through school in all of the easy classes and get straight A's and they think that it is success to get reconigized to have straight A's. But it isnt real success until you actually push your self to work and to get the good grades. When you are some one who takes all of the college classes and every hard class that u can to improve your knowledge and not just float through in pe and csb and other classes like that
In wrestling the #1 kid can go undefeated all season and then get creamed by the lowest kid on the bracket in the state title match. It just goes to show that any success you have before the showdown has the potential to mean nothing.
well getting good grade are one thing. To be sucessfuL you have to be above the bar. What i mean about that is getting good grades and don't do drugs or drink achoal and have a good career after you are all done with collage and do stuff that no one never thought of doing.
I believe that this is true because some people never try do what they can. Most people set very low standards and only stive to get there. but there are some people who set their standards high enough that they actually have to do work and push themselves to get where they want to be.
I think that this had alot to say about that you must earn what yopu want in life like to recive awards you must work like how he started to to play and he recived his rewards for what he had done in his life.
I think in school its like i kid will cheat and get a A even though they don't deserve it. so the cheater got a symbol of success but the cheater didn't really have any successes
I think symbols get confused with actual success by doing something easy like putting a tent up or clean the front yard but if u push yourself to get like the tent up and the yard cleaned and help fix a truck that is actual success so I think jordan is saying if u dont push yourself you dont get anywhere in life or in a sport

Like Trevor said, some kids try their hardest to do nothing in school. They try and just get by without doing anything and still manage to pull off an A at the last second. The fact that they got an 'A' means nothing if they don't walk away with anything useful after 18 weeks.
Michael Jordan sounds like a smart man. In school success comes in alot of ways. Working hard to become beter is what we should be doing. Just becuse people get good grades or have a 4.0 does not mean they are successful in school. They could be memorizing for the tesets.
i think symbols mean everything in school. thats wat it is everything we do there is symbols. math is symbols reading and wrighting are symbols so the man who created the sport of basketball is right.
This is when you start having that much wanted "control over your own life". It's the decisions you make during the 4 years of high school that will put you on the path to the rest of your life. Your parents are trying to help you make the best decisions based on their life experiences. Just like you will do the same thing to your kids one day even if you swear you won't. They want more for you than they had. High school may be a pain in the rear, and there are people who do buck the system and become successful without doing well in high school, but for most people, success in high school is the first indicator of success in life.
Symbols can cloud your mind if your just out for the materilistic side of school. True success comes from working long and hard for inner happiness. Whatever makes you happy!!
First of all, student who get good grades have several good personal characteristics because For the most part, kids with good grades know how to maintain some semblance of order in their lives.they must schedule certain times during the day in which they will sit down and do their homework or prepare for the tests.
if just take the easy road around the moutian then you wont learn eanything. you haft some chances go out on limb or something. people ride the back seat threw school and thats not ok we need to chalenge ourselves.
some people go through like its nithing but what i think is it's really hard to do.but people say success is straight A's but i think it's pushing yourself going the extra mile.
The last statement is powerful. Anything of value is EARNED, it's not just give and take. The fact is life is quid pro quo, everything is this for that in life that is of value. This is a result of that, and that results in this causing the reception of that. You know cause and effect, you have do something to earn the desired effect.
We believe that job shadowing is a great way to inspire kids to stay in school, and we're looking forward to meeting with local teens to discuss how they can make a difference in their lives and in their communities.
having good grades can trick you sometimes. if you take easy classes, and get good grades, you might think that of being successful. but when you go off the college or work, you might see what hard work really is. Take advantage of school being free and try to learn as much as you can so you truely can be successful.
People in school tend to be lazier than they should. They might have good gpa's and grades but most of the time they take easy classes. This makes them look good, but it's not the same as actually learning something.
